I burst into laughter. “In other words, you’ll show us a little consideration, but at the end of the day, Dilhade’s laws mean nothing compared to Jiordal’s teachings.”

“That is not what I said.”

“Can you pledge not to harm Dilhade as part of the Selection Trial?”

“I cannot foresee the intentions of the Almighty Radiance.”

“So when the time comes, you’ll set Dilhade ablaze without hesitation. I wouldn’t call that a compromise.”

“Then allow me to suggest a solution that will benefit us both.” Golroana looked at me sincerely.

“Oh? I’ll hear you out, but I won’t expect much.”

“How about Dilhade joins the religion of Jiordal?”

It sounded like a joke, but both the pope’s tone and expression were utterly serious.

“As long as you have faith, the Almighty Radiance will solve all your problems.”

“I’ve thought of an even better solution. How does this sound?”

Golroana listened with a skeptical look.

“Unite Jiordal with Dilhade. Come under my rule and swear fealty to the Demon King, and I will resolve all the problems of the underground world.”

“That is a foolish suggestion,” Golroana replied with a solemn look. “We are followers of Equis. It would be impossible for us to obey anyone else.”

“Now do you get it? The same applies to us.”

Golroana closed his eyes and prayed. “It is inevitable for there to be times when nations and their people fail to understand others. We will merely continue down our path, trusting in the gods.”

It was a roundabout way of saying so, but that basically meant he would invade Dilhade as soon as doing so aligned with his god’s teachings.

“That’s why I’m going to destroy it. Without that absurd trial, the world above ground won’t be in any such danger.”

Of course, that danger wouldn’t be completely gone, but the draconids wouldn’t be as much of a threat without the borrowed power of the Selection Gods.

“With all due respect, this is as much of a compromise as we’re willing to offer a foreign nation,” the pope said angrily. “If you demand any more than this, you will be punished accordingly.”

It seemed I had my answer. I stood up and looked down on Golroana. “Get up. I will destroy your god. If the Selection Trial is as holy as you say, you shouldn’t have any objections once you lose here.”
